IverJohnson

Question
I have an Iver Johnson Cadet model 55-SA with a serial number of G2828.  My grandfather gave me this gun before he passed away and I am trying to figure out a date of production on this particular revolver.  It is a 5 shot .38 caliber it is not a top break gun you load this one by flipping open a small flap on the side if the gun  and placing one bullet in then rotating the cylinder to insert another round.  any information you give will be greatly appreciated.   Thanks

Answer
Hello Cory.
The Iver Johnson Model 55-SA started manufacture in 1961 in the .22 rimfire caliber. In 1963, Iver Johnson began production of the Variation 1 in .38 S&W centerfire ( not .38 Special). The markings on the top strap are stamped in four lines. Two lines on one side of the sight groove "IVER JOHNSON CADET MOD.55-SA PAT. PEND." On the other side of the sight groove "I.J.A.&C.WKS. FITCHBURG,MASS.U.S.A." The caliber was stamped on the left side of the frame (it was at the front below the cylinder). The serial number was on the right side of the frame in the same location. The letter code used in the serial number for the .38 caliber was G. The front sight was a round half moon shape. This VARIATION 1 was manufactured from 1963 to 1974. The Model 55-SA Variation 2 was manufactured from 1974-1978/79.The name and address was changed from the top strap to the right side of the frame and condensed to two lines. The serial number with letter code remained on the left side of frame. When the caliber marking is present, it will be either on the left side of the barrel or the cylinder. A new front sight was used. It was a low ramp and full length rib, cast in one piece. It was attached to the barrel with a pin in the front and a screw on the back, near the frame. On the variation 3, the only difference was a cylinder stop was added. I wish I could be more specific on the acctual year.
I hope one of these matches your revolver. Thank you for asking for my assistance. Charles Gage
