Question
I own a Stevens Model 311C Savage Arms Westfield Mass. U.S.A. Under the barrels on the reciver are some stampings. In order from left to right they are, A in a circle, J in a circle, A, N. On left side of reciver is s/n A007521. Barrels have stampings on them also. Left barrel, 13V, right barrel, 7V. Would like to know date of manufacture. Gun is in perfect working order. Steel and wood are excelent. Would like to find out value so I can decide if I want to take it out in the woods or put it on display. Thank you for your time.
Answer
Hello Brad.
Savage purchased Stevens in 1920 with it's manufacturing plant located in Chicopee Falls, Mass. In 1946, they moved their plant to Westfield, Mass. and it remains there today. Serial numbers were not required until 1968. The last Stevens Model 311 was shipped in 1988. Savage used a letter prefix in the serial number of every gun they manufactured from 1968-1988. In 1978, they added a number (1-20) on all three major parts (receiver, barrel, and fore arm iron) to keep 20 guns of the same model together for packaging in their standard 20 gun shipping carton. The 'C' following Model 311 tells the series or changes made during it's production. Since there were about 75,000 per year manufactured from 1968-1988, your Stevens Model 311C serial A007521 was manufactured as one of the early 1968 production. Since the Model 311 has been one of the all time favorite hunting firearms of the 20th century, with over 4 million guns manufactured, the value is not as a collectable, but rather as a shooter. The value of a very good condition Model 311 is around $325. Take it shooting!
I hope this helps answer your questions, and thank you for asking for me. Charles Gage
