own handgun
Question
I obtained a handgun while serving in the military in Texas. After I ended my service in the Army i returned home to NY and I had my handgun with me. Many years passed and in 2011 while I was traveling out of the country I forgot to take my weapon out of the luggage at JFK airport. I was arrested and after a lengthy investigation I was let go with a plea of disorderly conduct. I would like to obtain another handgun for my house. Would this stop me from getting one?
Answer
Sijo,
The disorderly conduct charge should not have any effect on your ability to purchase a firearm as long as it was a misdemeanor, which I suspect it was.
Please understand that you will be required to comply with other part of the law if you purchase a firearm in Washington, DC and that those laws are highly restricting with both training and registration being part of the required process.
I am not familiar with the details of the DC law, but a quick phone call to the DC Metro Police will most likely get you the information you need.
You can also visit their website at the following web address for more information about firearms registration: http://mpdc.dc.gov/mpdc/cwp/view,a,1237,q,547431,mpdcNav_GID,1523,mpdcNav,|.asp
Hope this helps you out...
