Buying a home defense shotgun
Question
What is a good home defense shotgun that will not break the bank?
Would you buy a used shotgun for home use?
I found Mossberg shotgun (8-shot) for $400. (used) and I also found a new one for $600. Which one would you buy and why or why not the other?
Thank you for your time, Louis
Answer
If the shotgun is being purchased through a reputable dealer, who will stand behind it, there is no reason not to get a used gun. Shotguns have simple firing pathways (smooth bore) with very little go to wrong. The mechanics of the actions however (slide bar, elevator, interrupter) can develop problem, most of which are easily fixed by someone competent in their workings.
Many guns are carried a lot (in the case of a shotgun, perhaps in a trunk) and so may show some outside wear and even abuse, but have been fired little and be perfectly serviceable.\
Guns are simple machines, much simpler than automobiles and with little exception, if they look OK they are OK.
For these reasons I would never buy a new gun if I could get a comparable used gun from a dealer who would stand behind it for significantly less money.
