Question
Hi Rod: Thanks again for all the previous advice. Gotta go with the Rem. 700 BDL in .223, the most beautiful rifle w/walnut stock I have ever laid eyes on and for .17HMR I like the Savage Low Profile Varminter. Looked at the Rem. 700 VS you mentioned but I don't want to spend that much. As for my .243 Rem. ADL I was looking into getting a replacement stock. Have you done this w/any of your rifles ? What's your opinion of thumbhole stocks ? Thanks.....'Shootin' Glenn
Answer
Howdy Glenn,
Good choices, but what's the price difference on the VS? It shouldn't really be that much and that heavy barrel is definitely a plus for target shooting and the bedding in the HS Precision stock will be excellent.
I like the thumbhole stocks as an alternative to a pistol grip, but I'd prefer the latter. It's just a more natural hand position. The thumbhole stock comes pretty close. I've bought some aftermarket stocks in the past for special purpose use. Choate's are good, but BUTT-UGLY. For aftermarket, I'd go with a McMillan, but it'll cost you:

They are, in my opinion, the absolute best. I don't work for them, don't get paid by them, no commissions, nothing, so my recommendation doesn't gain me anything except the knowledge that I steered you to the best :) Hope you're doing well! -Rod-
