Kimber Pistol

Question
The last time I took my pistol out of my safe to shoot I noticed that the chrome chipped off parts of the barrel to the right of the external extractor and at parts of the tip of the barrel and RUSTED. What could have caused this? I passionately care for all my guns and clean them thoroughly after ever use. I am very curios what could have cause this to a pistol that I bought 2 months ago and I only used once.
Answer
David,
I'm very surprised to hear that about your Kimber and I'm willing to bet Kimber would be surprised too.
I know Kimber stands by their work; I had a .22 conversion kit was adjusted wrong at the factory and wouldn't fire. They sent me a new one and an additional .22 magazine.
I'd contact Kimber, tell them what's wrong, have a dealer ship it back to them and I'd fully expect a replacement shipped out quickly.
As for how this happeened, I really don't know. Something may have gone wrong in the plating process, causing the coating to not adhere to the metal as it should have. Clearly, the ordinance steel beneath the plating oxidized quickly, which too is odd. The only thing I can think of is excess moisture getting into your safe. I'd place a humidity gauge in the safe and see what it says (they can be had pretty cheap from a cigar shop, just make sure to calibrate it first).
Hopefully I've been of some help, if you've any other questions, please feel free to ask.
Kyle
