Sig 226 vs 226DAK

Question
I've been looking into buying a sig 226 and my big question is what is the advantage of the DAK. I'm a junior now in college and when I get out I'm hopefully going to join the Pennsylvania State police. Is there an advangtage to a Double/ Single over a double only, which is prefered by most police departments. I'm just putting in a lot of range time now and am looking for a gun that will be comperable to what I'll be using once I become a cop. Sig is just one manufacture that I'm looking at if you have a better segestion it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Answer
Pat,
The SIG DAK stands for "double action Kellerman" after the man who invented it. It is a relatively light double action only trigger.
The reasoning behind the DAK is to give both a consistent trigger pull from shot to shot, and a longer trigger pull.
The reason for the first is that many people have trouble adjusting from the trigger pull of the first shot (long heavy) to the pull of subsequent shots (short, light), a phenomenon which Jeff Cooper called "the crunch-tick."
I myself do not like an inconsistent trigger pull at all, although SIGs are the best of breed if I had to have one. Still, if I were to own or use a SIG, I personally would prefer the DAK.
I am not partial to SIGs, however. In my experience, they tend to cost more than they are worth. Although accuracy from them can be approaching excellent, in hard training, I have seen them choke - despite their claims, they must be kept fairly clean to function properly. Acquaintences from a FL PD who used SIG's complained about them rusting in the humidity. They said, in fact, that they had to wipe rust of them every day when they got off duty.
H&K with their "hostile enviornment" finish are better, but they too, in my opinion, cost more money than they are worth.
I have carried a Glock for a dozen years now, and have competed with it in IDPA competition for a decade now. When considering reliability, accuracy, lack of rusting, ruggedness, simplicity, and cost, the Glock is very hard to beat in my opinion.
But SIGs are excellent guns and you wouldn't go wrong with one. Good luck in your new career.
