7 mm Spanish Mauser

Question
Dear Mr. Zukowski,
I am a gun enthusiast (novice) rather than a hunter and it is within this framework that I am asking my questions. I have a Spanish 7 mm Mauser (Fabrica de Armas, Oviedo 1920). The gun has been to my untrained eye sporterized, reblued and the original sight has been replaced with a Williams peep sight. The Mauser would appear to be in good condition. My question is this weapon capable of firing modern 7mm ammunition ? In looking over various 7mm cartridges I notice the muzzle velocity of the loads are quite variable. Is this weapon capable of firing any of the commercially available cartridges ? A hobby is one thing losing a part of your face is not an acceptable price to pay for the proviledge of firing an old weapon.
Many thanks,
Richard T. Kelly
Answer
Hi,
First on any rifle that old I would have a gunsmith check
the head space to ensure its safe to fire. It can only fire
7mm x 57 Mauser ammo. No other 7mm round can be chambered and fired in the rifle.
There are not a great many variations of 7mm x 57 Mauser currently made.
