44 Colt in 44 Special Rifle

I am into cowboy action shooting. I shoot 44 Colt cartridges in my handguns and would like to be able to shoot them in my rifle. I have a 44-40 rifle and I don't believe I can safely shoot them in that gun. However, I am thinking of purchasing an 1873 Winchester by Uberti so I can shoot the 44 Colts thru it. Can I shoot 44 Colt safely thru a 44 Special rifle? Thanks.

Although opinions may vary, I personally do not endorse this practice.  Just because a cartridge will go into the gun does not mean that is should be done. In addition to this, I recommend that you contact the gun manufacture for their expert opinion.

The 44 Colt cartridge has a rim diameter of 0.483", a rim thickness of 0.045" - 0.047", a head diameter of 0.456". The overall case length of 1.100".

The 44 Special has a rim diameter of 0.514", a rim thickness of 0.060" and a head diameter of 0.457". The overall case length is 1.160"

I would be concerned about the extractor being able to grab on to the smaller diameter rim. I would also be suspicious of head space problems.

Substitutions should not be made without specific recommendations of the firearm manufacture. Improper combonations could result in firearm damage or personal injury.
