Question
I found a JC Higgins 16 gauge bolt action shotgun 583-18 and was wondering if you could tell me where I could find information about the recall.
Answer
Hi Sam,
I would suggest that you contact Sears at 1-800-817-9165 for information on the shotgun that you describe. If your gun is one of the "recalled" ones, Sears is (or at least was) paying $160.00 for the bolt from the gun/s to prevent them from being used. They should be able to provide you with the current status and details concerning this program/recall.
The shotguns were sold in Sears stores as the "J.C. Higgins Bolt Action 12-gauge Model 10 Shotgun" during the 1950's. The product numbers are 583.13 through 583.22
Sears carried shotguns under the product name "J.C. Higgins" from 1946 to 1962. The recall was ordered due to a problem with the bolt latch assembly, which could cause the assembly to fail allowing it to dislodge and strike the operator.
You should not discharge the firearm and contact Sears at the number provided for verification and instructions.
