Question
Dear Sir,
I have never owned a firearm and am buying for the first time. I live in Australia and will be using my firearm to hunt game such as the wild boar. I need a firearm which is capable of effectivly wounding a target with accuracy at long distances varying from 100yds to on occasions 800yds. I have come to the conclusion that .308WIN Centrefire would best suit this criteria, would you agree? And also which rifle could best execute these needs, in your opinion (make and model). I have the Sako 75 Deluxe in mind and also the savage 10fpxp hs precision.
Thankyou for your time,
Luke
Answer
I have no idea as too what needed for Wild Boar in Australia. I'm in the USA. If they are similar to Boar in North America .308 Win will get the job done out to about 150 yards. Boar are thick skin, and very hard bones. .308 can get out to 1000 yards but you can't effectivly hunt at much over 350 yards. At that distance it would need to be a thin skinned animal to get a clean kill.
Sako rifle are rare here but there reputation is good.
Savage bolt actions are an excellent low dollar gun.
Sturdy, well made and accurate.
If available the Remington 700 is most accurate out of the box rifle you can buy.
If surplus NATO ammo is available cheaply you might
want to buy it to practice with it. Shooting is harder than
it looks.
