Question
I was selected in the draft to hunt mule deer and elk in coloroda this year. I am taking:
1-30-06, 1-270 and 1-300 short mag. Can you tell me typically what grains for each rifle would you recommend? Typical shot I am being told is 150-200 yards, although you might get lucky still hunting and pull off a 75 yard shot.
Thanks
Bob
Answer
Hi Bob,
Congratulations on being drawn for the hunt !
In the 06 or 300, I would stay in the 165 to 180 grn. class bullet. I could write papagraphs as to various weights and bullet construction so you'll need to also do your homework in that department too. In short, stay with the high performance/premium type bullets and you should be fine. If you need additional help with this let me know.
As for the 270, I must confess something first. I'm not a huge fan of the 270 although I know that many who use it claim to have slain dragons with them. Good for them ! I think that the 06 and/or 300 short mag will be all the gun that you'll need for this hunt. That said, if plan on staying with the 270 I would not go anything lighter than a 140 grain bullet with the same advice as to a premium bullet and construction.
At the distances that you mention I think you will be well served with any/all of the above recommendations. Just remember to make sure that your selected ammo is well liked by the rifle/s that you plan on using it in. Not all ammo groups well in in all rifles all the time.
This is a very general response and if you want/need more detail, just ask and I'll be happy to pursue this further with you. If not, I think you are good to go.
Have a safe trip and good luck.
