Question
I have just purchased a Ruger Super Blackhawk stainless in 7 1/2" length. I am considering getting the 4 5/8" barrel installed for woods carry. I am going to use Oregon Trails 310 gr bullets. I was told by some that my velocity decrease will be very extreme using 296,H110 or 'Lil gun powder. Will the velocity decrease be that extreme.???...I plan on using moderate loads...1,000 fps to 1,200 fps...Thanks for your info.
Answer
Hi Bob,
Good question !
You have made a very good choice of firearm for your intended purpose. This includes barrel length. You do not need a shorter barrel length "for woods carry". Overall you will eventually find that with the longer barrel you will enjoy a bit less perceived recoil, a longer sighting radius, and better accuracy. The extra two plus inches of barrel will actually be of benefit to you overall and in the long run. Keep in mind that some states have a minimum barrel length for handgun hunting. As an example, my home state of Ohio has a minimum of 5". Anything shorter is not legal for hunting purposes. Just something to be aware of.
Assuming that you go with a shorter barrel, you will not lose enough velocity to make any practical difference. I could go into the exact numbers of how many inches of reduced length will equate to how many f.p.s. reduced velocity with a paticular load but it is nothing more than academic for your purposes. I wouldn't even concern myself with it. So, if you want to do it, don't not do so due to velocity concerns. You'll be fine in that department.
Thanks for your question Bob and good hunting.
