re bluing a shotgun

Question
i recently aquired a mossberg 500 used from a gun show and it has some minor rust damage.  would rebluing it solve this problem or is there a better way to fix it.  if bluing is an option can i do it at home?

Answer
Hi Bob,

If you have "minor rust damage" you can probably do the job yourself if you are confident about doing so. Minor rust can be removed with an anti-rust/removal product and then cold blued.

Do not expect the finished product to look "as new" because that won't be the final result. However, it will still look much better than rust.

As for having the entire gun professionally reblued, I think that the cost would out weigh the benefit due to the relative value of the Mossberg. However, it is an option although not a very practical one.

I would attempt to remove the rust, degrease, and cold blue at home. However, that is just me. It is your investment to proceed with as you see fit. I hope this helps you in making that decision.

Thank you for the question.
