Question -
I bought a new 12 ga. shotgun and it says only to use 3"-3 1/2" shell. Can any other size be used and does the dove loads 3`s cost more?
Answer -
Shane,
What make and model 12 ga. did you purchas? Is it new or used and did it come with a owners manual?
I ask these question only because generally speaking if a shotgun is chambered for 3" and 3.5", it is also designed to use 2-3/4 shells. Right off hand I cannont think of an exception to that, however that does not mean that there is not one.
The answer to your original question is "yes" 3" shells will cost you more than 2-3/4 and and 3.5" will cost more than 3". Not only that but the 3" and above shells, generally are only available in larger loads/shot size.
For the time being don't use any shells in it except for what the instructions/owners manual & and barrel stamping indicates to use.
Maybe when I can get the additional info from you I will be able to help you more.
Thanks,
Sid Lark
AnswerShane,
I am assuming that you have a Mossberg semi-auto 935 which is designed for 3 and 3.5" magnum loads. Appearently the gas systems design is such that 2.75" loads will not properly cycle the action due to the reduced pressure/s.
If your owners manual and the barrel stamping both adivse 3" to 3.5" I would not recommend attempting the use of the 2.75" More than likely the gun will not eject/load the lower pressure shells.
If you are still in doubt, I'd recommend checking with Mossberg service at

Good luck and thanks for the question.
