old ammo

2016/7/22 9:22:12

Question
I have factory loaded 38 and 357 cal. ammo that is about8 years old.  They have been stored in a climate controlled envirment, in my home.  Is this ammo still safe to use.

Answer
Stanley,

Based upon your storage description, I would not be concerned about using the ammo in question. Actually the question of usage is more about reliability than safety. IE. If the ammo was stored where it was exposed to certain types of penetrating oil/sprays that could effect the primers causing the ammo to fail.

For what it is worth, I've shot ammo that was stored similar to yours for a much longer time with no misfires or problems of any kind.

It is a good idea to use the ammo sooner than later but that said, I'd not have any concerns about the ammo in question.

Thanks for the question.
