Question
Would a shotgun made by Eastern Arms Co. or Stevens have Belgian proof marks?

-----Question-----
I have recently purchased a 12-gauge double barrelled shotgun, and the only markings on it are "Ranger" in a banner, on both sides of the receiver.  It also has numerous Belgian proof marks under the barrells, but no dates. The rib between the barrells is marked Damascus Steel.
Can you tell me who sold this model, and when?
-----Answer-----
Hi Gary,

"Ranger" was a trade name found on various firearms made by both Eastern Arms Co. and Stevens for the Sears Robuck and Co. of Chicago.

Although I cannot give you an exact date of manufacture, I can tell you that the "Ranger" sold between 1926 up to the mid to late 40's. Sears discontinued the sale of all firearms in the 80's.

Thanks for the question Gary.

Answer
Gary,

That is a tough question but the short answer is "yes" it is possible.

Although the Eastern Arms Co./Stevens etc. manufactured these, there is reason to believe that there were also a number of these guns manufactured by other firms in the US and in Belgium. So....... the markings that you describe are indeed possible on one of these Sears Rangers.

The waters do seem to get more than a bit muddy when researching "department store - trade name guns" but this is the best info that I currently have on the subject.

Hope this helps clear it up for you.
