Question
Recently obtained a weapon from my dad, which he called a "bicycle gun". It is single shot .22 caliber with a removable metal stock. I found a photo on Google image, but cannot insert here. Would like to send you the photo to see if you can tell me what I have, and if it is worth anything. thanks.
Answer
Hi Dan,
The "bicycle gun" that you ask about is probably a J. Stevens "Pocket Rifle". The series of pistols were produced with a detachable metal shoulder stock. They often are referred to as "Bicycle Guns".
They have a lot of collectors interest however you must be careful in regards to certain restrictions that the gun/s fall under via the Gun Control Act of 1968. When the stock is attached they can fall under the category of a short barreled rifle. Many are considered to be curious and relics, and some have been totally declassified while still others are restricted.
If you plan on participating in any transactions concerning this gun, it would behove you to get a qualified, individual appraisal on the firearm in question just to be 100% sure of what you are dealing with. Are you dealing with a curio/relic, or a restricted firearm under the G.C.A. 1968.
As for value....... The problem arises that there are about ten different models and values. They are as follows:
Old Model Pocket Rifle...... good condition.... $500
Reliable Pocket Rifle........good condition.... $500
No 42 Reliable Pocket Rifle..good condition.... $475
First Issue New Model P.R.....good condition... $650
Second Issue " "....good condition...$600
Vernier Model.................good condition...$650
No. 40........................good condition....$650
No. 40-1/2....................good condition....$700
No. 34 (Hunter's Pet).........good condition....$700
No. 34-1/2....................good condition....$900
So..... as you can see, based upon the models of the "Bicycle Gun" that were produced, the value of yours (if in "good" condition") is between $475 and $900.
This should get you on your way concerning info on the firearm in question. Thanks for the question.
