M14 versus Mosin Nagant - Accuracy?

Question
Hi GCH,
My son (14) asked me a question that I had no idea on how to answer.
He asked me which rifle was more accurate at a long distance, the M14 or the Mosin Nagant rifle? He also wanted to know which rifle fired the bigger and more powerful cartridge as well. Can you help me with this question please? Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Michael
Answer
The rifles' power are very similar. The 7.62x54 Russian has virtually equivelant ballistics to the 7.62x51 NATO.
The Mosins can be very accurate, being a bolt action rifle. Post WWII M-14's, being autoloading guns, were probably not as accurate. I doubt that the new Springfield M1A's are any less accurate than pre-20 century turnbolt guns, though.
I do not believe you will find much difference in practical accuracy (both rifles were designed to hit human sized torsos at distance). The M14 (like the Garand before it), being semiauto (or full auto) is more versatile, and a better battle implement.
I hope this is helpful.
