Question
I have my grandfathers H & R Single Shot 12 gauge that I am told he ordered from the Sears and Roebuck catalog. I would guess the timing must have been between 1910 and 1930. Is there any way to get information regarding the gun, i.e. original cost, current value, years produced, or general historical information? Thank you for your response.
Answer
Hi,
Sears mail ordered millions of guns untill the law prevented it in 1968.
H&R been making the same basic shotgun from 1880
to now.
(I bought a new one last June in 16 ga for $109.95)
Its been upgraded and model names and numbers have changed but the basic gun hasn't.
There are no serial numbers untill required by law in 1968, so an exact date is impossible.
There should be model number on it.
Between 1908 & 1942 they offered the model 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. There was also a folding model. The number 3 was hammerless. The others were exposed hammer.
Its current value is $125 to $40 depending on
its condition and exact model. Cost when new was $10 to $15 depending on the year it was purchased.
They made guns in 12, 16, 20, 24, 28 and .410 gauges.
There were many different barrel lenghs and chokes.
A local old time gunsmith MIGHT be able to narrow the date down a little if he sees it in person.
It should be safe to shoot as long as it has chamber for a 2 3/4 inch chamber and is in good condition. (it likily does and may say on the gun if not any gunshop can check it.)
Use standard velosity lead shot only.
