Question
Sid, I just bought a new Sig 239 40 SAS for conceal carry. My head is swimming from all the so called different best cartridge for stopping a criminal attack at close range (ie: JHP fill with clothing or other debris and FMJ over penetrate and are hazardous for innocent bystanders. Can you shed any light on this for me? Thanks
Answer
Hi Bill,
As they say.... "been there, done that". So.... I can certainly appreciate your sentiments. The manufactures sure do make it confusing.
Actually, for your purposes I would recommend a JHP of "quality" construction with a good track record. There are speciality rounds that are capable of doing some things extremely well and some things so-so.
Do not worry yourself about all of this, most of it is information overload for your needs. As you may have read, my background is law enforcement and those needs would be totally different from yours. That said, I will tell you that we carried Federal Hydra-shoks. Suffice it to say that they do what they are advertised to do.
Take a look at Federals website and plug in your parameters. You will get a full listing of all available Hydra-shok ammo for the Sig 40. There obviously are other comparable loads available from other manufactures that may work just as well. However.... I'm trying to simplify the process for you and direct you to a product that I've seen work first hand. By the way, don't worry about fabric "filling a hollow point" stuff, it really is basically a non-issue. These rounds will definitely ruin a bad guys day regardless of what the round may pass through as long as its not a Kevlar vest !
On a side note, I think you have made an excellent selection in both caliber and brand firearm. Our 800 man local agency recently changed from Sig 9mm to the Sig 40 and it was done for good reason.
I hope this is what you were looking for and solves your dilemma. If not, "shoot" me another question and I'll try harder !
Thanks for the question Bill.
