Question
I have recently purchased a custom 98 Mauser in 7 X 64 Caliber. I can find no reloading data for this cartridge.
One internet inquiry just referred to 280 Rem. Can I just use 280 reloading data ? Thanks any hints on this would be helpful. Also I purchased a used Redfield Partner 3X9 scope and I,m not familiar with the "Partner" designation; know anything about this ?
Answer
congratulations,
The 7x64 is a good all around caliber for all contintual game (excluding Bear)
Federal makes a premium round for the 7x64 Brenneke, making reloading a non-issue BUT the info below will assist your reloading efforts
ALWAYS START AT MINIMUM LOAD
INSPECT CASES, ANY SHINY RINGS, ESPECIALLY AROUND THE BASE MEAN 'THROW TEM AWAY"

The following data was developed in a Mannlicher Luxus model rifle with 20 inch barrel. We installed a Leupold 4.5 ?14X Vari X III scope in EAW mounts. As the velocities show, putting a short barrel on this caliber is really self defeating. I am not sure whether very similar velocities could not have been obtained with a rifle chambered for the 7x57 Mauser. We have two rifles here chambered for the 7x64, both have 20 inch barrels. We are planning to remove the barrel off one of these rifles and replacing it with a 20 inch barrel chambered for the 7x57 Mauser. We will then be able to see if there is any differences in the velocities obtained.
