Western Field 16 Gauge Side by Side

Question
There are no markings to indicate a model number of this gun I just bought. I have a serial number that most likely will not help. It is 286825. This gun was sold through Mongomery Ward. Can you tell me the approximate dates guns like this were sold? Any clues as to the model? I also need to get the hammer or cocking mechanism repaired. Any help?

Answer
Hi Don,
It is a little difficult to nail down the exact information without a model number. As you already know the Western Field line was a trade-name used by Montgomery Ward on shotguns sold through their stores. Most of these were sold from the early 60's through the late 70's.
There are several dozen Western Field models, gauges, etc., manufactured over the years. The majority of which were made by Mossberg, Savage, Stevens and the like. However there are a few that were made by other manufactures.
Based upon the information provided, I believe that your gun was made by Stevens and is similar to their model 311. These were made until the late 80's in the Stevens brand name however I believe that M.W. stopped stocking them prior to that.
In "good" condition the gun would have a retail value of approximately $250 to $300.
As for repair, I can only advise to take it to a qualified gunsmith in your area for inspection and advice. If you need to check on parts availability, take a look at www.e-gunparts.com.
Thanks for the question.
