Question
Yes hello, I just bought a new gun what king of ammunition should I use for it.

Answer
Hi Kyle.

New guns or used guns that have not been modified should have markings on the barrel, cylinder, or frame that indicate which caliber or type of ammunition should be used in the firearm. You should match these markings up with the instruction manual that was provided by the manufacturer since some manuals include more detail about the types of cartridges which should or should not be fired in the gun. Once you have confirmed the proper caliber for your firearm then there are dozens of cartridge choices available since each ammunition manufacturer generally offers several different combinations of casing, powder type, powder charge, primer type, and bullet style depending on the intended use.

You need to consider a few factors before you select a specific cartridge:

- Is the gun new or used? If it is used then you should have it checked out by a qualified gunsmith to be sure that it has not been modified or damaged in any way. Used guns are sometimes modified to shoot different calibers or they could have defects which are only obvious to a trained professional. Many gunsmiths will do this for free so it can't hurt to get the gun checked out.

- Where will you shoot? For example, hunting in dense woods and shooting at fairly close range will require different ammunition than target practice on an open range at long distances.

- What will you shoot? Big game requires different ammunition than small game, paper targets, or self defense applications.

- What is your budget and how much ammunition will you need?

To select a specific cartridge that is right for your needs I recommend that you visit a local gun shop and discuss the questions above. They can show you several products and make a specific recommendation. You can also research this yourself by visiting the manufacturers' websites or calling and asking them to send you a free ammunition product guide. You can also visit some forums on the web to see what other shooters are using. I have included a few links below to get you started:
