Question
Hi, I would really be grateful if you could tell me something about when the Stevens Model 66 .22LR rifles were manufactured. I have one that was handed down to my Dad then to me. I'm having a gunsmith do a safety check on it so I can hand it down to my Daughter, and if I knew something about the type of gun, it would be outstanding.
I have pictures of my Grandfather with the gun in the '30's, I think.
Thanks so much!
Answer
John,
I'm pleased to hear that you had the forethought to have a gunsmith personally inspect the rifle prior to handing it down to your Daughter. Too many folks do not and merely try to rely upon the advise provided at various websites such as this one. That is not not good enough and I'm the first to admit it and advise to follow the route that you have chosen. Nice job !
The Stevens Co. produced many inexpensive bolt action .22 rifles. They were made in single shot and repeaters. Based upon the number of questions that are received about these, they were obviously very popular. They were designed as a "starter rifle" for youths.
The rifle in question was manufactured from about 1930 to 1948 and if in "good" condition would have a retail value of around $100.
That said, I'm sure that this having been in the family for years and at one time your Dad's, there really is no dollar amount that can be attached to it. At least that's my view of it.
Thank you for the question John.
