Question
I have a shotgun made by J.Stevens Arms Co. in 1915. It is a double barrel, but seems to be too small for 12, or 20 gauge shells. Any idea what size shells I need.
Answer
Hi Mikal.
It is impossible to be sure of the exact model or gauge without inspecting your firearm in person. Usually the gauge or caliber is stamped on the barrel, receiver, or frame but on older firearms the markings can be concealed, rusted, or worn off. It is also possible that your gun has been modified from the original factory configuration so it is best to be careful and have it checked by a gunsmith for safety prior to shooting it. In some cases the older guns were made of weaker steel which may not be compatible with modern loads so your gun could explode like a grenade if loaded with modern ammunition. It could also be valuable so shooting it might reduce the value significantly.
If it is a standard gauge then it probably takes a 28 gauge or .410 caliber shell which are significantly smaller than 20 gauge. To see the different shell sizes check out this photo:

You have to purchase the file for download but for $10 it is well worth it since it will give you the history and description of each model as well as the current value. If you have other firearms you can also purchase the entire book for $35 (online or printed version). Once you figure out your specific model then you should be able to search the web for documentation that may include the original factory manual.
