Old .22 rifle will be presented as gift to grandson on birthday

Question
Sid, I have an old .22 rifle (excellent condition) that was passed on to me when I was a very young man. My grandson Ethan will have his 14th birthday next week, and I want to pass it on to him as a present. Is there any way that you could tell me the age of this beautiful rifle? It appears to be a Reminton .22 (short)..no name. It was passed on to me approximately 50 years ago. Model number 24. Serial number 124291. Would like to know the age, history, and current value, if possible, so that I can pass this info on to my grandson on his birthday (Feb 2). Thanks for your valuable service.
Best Regards, J. W. Evans, CDR, USCG (Ret)
Answer
Joe,
How very nice that you have this rifle and are planning on presenting it to you grandson on his birthday. He is at a great age to appreciate it and perhaps Grandpa will be able to spend time instructing and shooting with him. I'm sorry to say that what you are doing for him seems to be a dying tradition. Thanks for passing it on !
As for the rifle (sorry that I digressed), The Remington M-24 was actually a John Browning design. It should have about a 19" barrel with open sights. The finish is blue steel with a walnut pistol grip stock.
There were also "later versions" of this rifle that bear the model number 24A. Remington produced this rifle from 1922 to 1935 and if in "good" condition, would have a retail value of approximately $250.
Happy birthday to Ethan and thank you for the question Joe.
