what size shot goes the farest? will a shotgun slug go a mile?
Answer
The size of shot has little to do with it's speed or distence.
Shell are rated by dram equivalent.
#9 birds shot will have the same velosity as 00 buckshot if both have the same payload weight and dram eq. is the same.

The lighter shot will be a little slower with less energy
at 60 yards than a buckshot. In general the maximium effective range is 60 to 75 yards with birdshot fired through an extra full to turkey choke.

The larger the shot size and tighter the choke the farther it will go. In any case these are short range weapons.
Steel shot goes faster than lead shot, but dut doesn't hit as hard.

In general the effective range of a single slug 70 to 125
yards depending on the type of slug used.
If you arched a shot at just the right angle could it go a mile in the right conditions? Yes it could.
From an aimed shot, it not likily. Most slugs have dropped 4 inches after 100 yards.
In general maximium range on a slug is 850 yards or less than 1/2 mile.
