Esses .410 Pistol

2016/7/22 9:20:31

Question
Hello,
I have inherited an Essex .410 pistol with a very short barrel, about 8".  I am wondering if this is a variation of the Crescent Certified Shotgun.  I don't have any use for this and will probably offer it for sale, but have no idea what it's worth.  I have only seen one for sell on the web, for $1250, is that a fair value?  This one has a chrome-like receiver area which is in rough shape, and the bluing on barrel isn't great either.  I appreciate your time.
Thanks,
Mike

Answer
Hey Mike,

Essex = Essex Gun Works which was the trade name used by the Crescent - Davis Firearms Company on shotguns made for the Belknap Hardware Co. of Louisville, Kentucky.

To get a accurate value you really need to have it personally inspected by a qualified person. There are many variables to consider in addition to condition.

I am guessing that it is as you suspect, a variation of the Certified Shotgun NFA, Curio or Relic. If so (and I cannot confirm via the net) and in "good" condition it would have an approximate retail value of $550.

I wish I could comment more on the $1250 price that you saw one sell for on the web. If that was a gun auction, it would be worth whatever a bidder was willing to pay for it. However, the actual book listing (assuming that we are correct in our identification) is as I've stated and even if in "Exc." condition would have a retail value of only $1000. So......... it is possible I guess.

There are several versions/models of this shotgun and much of the value depends upon correct identification and determined condition. Although this may help you narrow it down and get you on the right track, do yourself a favor and get the appraisal prior to advertising it for sale. I want to see you get the most $$ for your efforts.

Thanks for the question Mike.
