Question
Have been searching for info on a .22 rifle I have, and quite confused what I have come across. Some articles state the rifle was never made ??? The one I have bears the following info. SPRINGFIELD ARMS COMPANY,22.SHORT-LONG OR LONG RIFLE CHICOPEE FALLS,MASS.USA. There is NO model # or serial #. A few years ago while on EBAY I came across an article for sale. It was for a brocure dated 1930 with pictures of SPRINGFIELD RIFLES.Just like the one I have. They called it SPRINGFIELD CHALLENGE NO.52 single shot .22 cal.rifle.Price was $4.90. My 22 is missing the bolt action and that is why I was searching internet. Any leads on my part search? Thought you would fined ebay article interesting. Thanks for your expertise: Lynn in Pensacola
Answer
Lynn,
Interesting !
First of all we need to identify the actual manufacture of this rifle which happens to be J. Stevens Arms Co. of Chicopee Falls, Mass. So that is where we need to concentrate the research.
Stevens manufactured almost 20 various .22 rifles under as many model numbers and names. All were inexpensive utility type and were both single shot and repeaters.
The firearm today in "good" condition has a approximate retail value of $100 to $150.
As for parts, If you have not yet done so try Numrich Gun Parts Co. Their site can be viewed at www.e-gunparts.com They should be able to help. There are also many schematics etc. at said site and they may even have one for your rifle.
Thanks for the question and if I can be any further assistance, just ask.
