Question
which do you think has the most stopping power. I would also like to know about the .45 gap compared to the other two. thank you.
Answer
Hi Xavier.
There are many books and studies about stopping power. Everyone has their own opinions so I can't give you a factual answer, just my opinion.
In general I think the .45 will have the most stopping power if fired at a similar or faster velocity than the others. The trouble is that most large-caliber cartridges sacrifice speed for size so they are often much slower than the smaller calibers.
Personally I believe that all 3 of these calibers have adequate stopping power for most needs but it depends on what you are trying to stop.
You also need to be sure to get the right bullet style such as jacketed hollowpoint, glaser safety slug, full metal jacket, etc. I can't recommend a specific load for you without knowing more about your needs however I personally like the .357 Sig the best followed by the .40 S&W for my personal defense needs.
You can find more info on these loads with the following search link:

Good luck!
