Question
I'd like to buy a pistol and a rifle that use the same cartridge. Is that impossible? I like
the 40 cal pistols and the 30-30 rifle. Is there something close to those? I want to use the
rifle for hunting deer and the pistol for protection both in home as well as when I'm hunting.
Answer
Hi Ray.
There are many cartridges which can be fired in a rifle as well as a pistol. Some of the more common options are: .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, 9mm, .22 LR, and .22 Magnum. It is not likely for one cartridge or caliber to be ideal for both self defense at home and hunting in the field but the .44 Magnum and .454 Casull calibers might be worth looking into. You can probably find a wide assortment of loads in both calibers but they will take significant amount of practice before you are proficient with shooting from a pistol and rifle accurately, especially under the stress and constraints of a defensive scenario.
