Question
I am thinking of starting shooting with my son. I thought a bolt action 22 single shot would be fine. After all I can remember using the same with my father about 40 years ago. Do they even sell guns like this anymore? Would you recommend a brand or model. We plan to go to gun safety class's for a start.
Answer
A bolt action .22 is a very good choice because of safety over the semi-autos. You might even consider working with him using a pellet rifle first then work your way up to a .22 caliber.
There are many very good starter rifles. You might consider a Browning A-Bolt .22. A used Browning rifle in very good condition will cost from $350-$400. You can also find some Rugers and Winchesters for a few dollars less.
I have both an A-Bolt .22 and a Ruger bolt action for my little boy, but plan on starting him with a pellet rifle first. When he understands the importance of using a rifle safely, then we will move onto the .22 caliber. The important thing to remember is to spend the quality time and effort to teach him gun safety and ethical hunting.
