Question
I understand that there were a few companys that produced guns for Montgomery Wards using their name as Western Field. I have a break down single barrel 20 gauge and the only numbers on the gun are 7418D and im guessing that is the serial number. That is the only number visible on the gun, no model number. Can anyone tell me what company produced this gun and what its approximate worth because of the age. Hope someone can help me out here.
Answer
Gary,
You are correct...Mossberg and Savage produced the majority of the Western Field shotguns, which was the MW store brand name. I did a cross reference check and cannot match the number you provided to a Mossberg or Savage model. It is probably the serial number. Without the model number I can't track it back to the mfg. I can tell you that the shotguns were produced for MW throughout most of the 60's and 70's.
You should probably check with a gun store about what they would offer...but to be honest, it is not really all that old, the number produced was pretty high and the value is not likely to be super high. To warn you, the gun store will very likely only offer you half of what they think they can sell it for.
Hope this helps some...
