Gun range distance

Question
We are planning a shooting match for Sat. Need to know how far to put the targets for the shoot. We are using Shot gun targets at 30 yards. Can you advise me the distance we should put the targets for hand guns.
Thanks,
Terry
Answer
There are a lot of different distances for pistol competitions, and the types of targets vary with the distance and type of shooting. The standard NRA bullseye competition is 50 feet indoors, or 25 yards outdoors. Various "action shooting" competitions include drawing from a holster and firing fairly quickly, with most distances usually in the 7 to 15 yard range, and sometimes a few at up to 25 yards. But you shouldn't have people drawing and firing unless they have been qualified for that. In any case, you should have a range officer to tell everyone the safety rules, to ensure the rules are followed, and to keep the firing range safe.
Hope this helps!
