Question
I just purchased a Springfield Armory XD-45.First I want to ask do you think these are good guns. Also I wanted to ask why would it not like hollowpoints. The ones I have tried are MFS made in Hungary, they do not want to feed. Thanks in advance for any answers you might have.
Answer
Keith,
I think generally the XDs are excellent guns. I have owned an XD45 Tactical, and one of my sons has an XD9. Both work flawlessly.
In training I have seen several XD40s fail to feed. I usually don't have time to diagnose students' guns, but I suspect the problem is with the extractor.
I couldn't tell you why your gun would fail to feed without looking at it. I'm not familiar with the MFS ammuntion - is this the only ammunition that fails to feed? Some guns simply do not like particular kinds of ammunition.
I always recommend that the feedramp of any autopistol be polished. This is a simple procedure, and one which, if you are not comfortable doing it, a gunsmith should charge you no more than $10-15 for it.
If you are having problems with numerous types of ammunition re: feeding, my guess without seeing it is that it is the extractor. If so, you should send it back to Springfield with a polite but firm note telling them that you bought this gun for self-defense, and failures to feed are not acceptable - they should make it right.
Good luck
