QUESTION: My husband just bought this gun for 700.00 and I was wondering if it was worth that?

ANSWER: Hi Irene,

I don't think that either you or your husband will be happy with my answer.

These guns are of fairly contemporary manufacture.  They were made by Stevens Arms under the name Springfield.  In 1989 they stopped manufacturing this model.  Most of the guns out there seem to be from the 1960s and 1970s.

While they were a decent gun, the brand was always targeted to be a relatively inexpensive and utilitarian shotgun.  Brand new these guns retailed for $245 to $295.  While they seem to have shooting interest and are generally well liked by their owners, they are not considered to be collectable.  One of these guns in "New in Box" condition today the gun would only be worth between $200-$250.  Obviously the more signs of use and wear, the lower the value of the gun.  One in fair to good condition might be had for as little as $150.

This is based on both the Blue Book of Gun Values (current edition) and on market research on what they are selling for at online gun auction sites.

I would guess that unless there is something about this gun that is very special that you haven't told me, you should be able to buy a gun of this type for under $250.

I would gently suggest to your husband (we guys can have pretty fragile egos in situations like this), that he may want to contact the seller and discuss a rebate.  If that isn't possible (and that is very likely possibility),  I'd suggest doing a bit more research next time prior to paying a high price for a used gun.

QUESTION: Browning Arms Company St.Louis.It doesn't have a serial unless on the chamber it has A25 325.It also has Twelvette engraved on the chamber.And on the barrel it has these letters o Kg 9 36. a odd emblems looks like a (U) lying down.And several more PV (ELG*) 12-7O inside a looks like a horseshoe.

The gun you describe is a Browning Double Auto, designed by the late Val Browning, son of John M. Browning. This model was manufactured between 1952 and 1971 in Belgium by Fabrique Nationale. There were three variations in 12 gauge only: Standard, Twelvette and Twentyweight. The alloy frame was available in different colors including royal or light blue, satin gray, green, gold, black and brown.  Depending on the condition and model, prices can range from $350 to $700 with a premium being paid for rare color frames.  So if you have one in excellent condition, $700 is not an unreasonable price to pay.

Since it is no longer manufactured, I thought I would let you know where you can get parts.
