Question
QUESTION: I have an old single shot rifle marked J. Stevens & co. Chicopee Falls, Mass, Pat. Sept 6, 1864. What is the caliber of this rifle? What is it worth? Thanks
ANSWER: Hi Meredith,
I need some more information about the gun to answer your question. First, the patent date of 1864 is not the model number. There should be other markings on the barrel that provide a model name or number. You should also find something that indicates what caliber the gun is. Look for a number followed by the notation 'cal' or 'caliber'.
If you can locate a serial number that might be helpful.
J. Stevens manufactured dozens of models of all types of rifles and did so for many years, so I need more information to give you any kind of good answer.
Please send me additional info in a follow up email and I will be happy to try and help you out.
Regards,
Doug

QUESTION: Doug,
The SN is 8489. There is absolutely no other stamping or marks on the rifle than the Manufacture. The rifle has an additional flip up sight at the tang of the stock. Looks like an adjustable peep sight. 32 cal bullet will not fit muzzle. 25 cal is a maybe at muzzle.
Answer
Meredith,
Sorry...there is just not enough information for me to research. Stevens did make a bunch of 22 cal. rimfire and some .25 cal, but it is really hard to say with the info that I have to go on. You might try taking it to a gunsmith in your area. They may be able to help you more.
Good luck and sorry I can't be more helpful.
Regards,
Doug
