Springsfield Arms Co Dbl barrel 12 ga

2016/7/22 9:17:18

Question
Can you give me information on a Springsfield Arms Co Dbl barrel 12 ga.  It has: "Proof Tested 12 GA stamped on the barrel.  On the stock right above the triggers on the right side is stamped: "66" and right under it is "CP".
It is a side by side, has 2 triggers, says "Springfield Arms Co. Chicopee Falls, MASS USA".  I have no idea of the age but I think my father has had it since the 1960's and it was not new at that time.  There is no serial # or I don't know where to look for it.
Thanks, I appreciate your time and your knowledge
Eric

Answer
Eric,

Springfield was a trade name for shotguns manufactured by the J. Stevens Arms Co. of Chicopee Falls, Mass.

The problem with narrowing down exactly which gun that you may have is as follows; Stevens produced these guns from 1877 to 1988, many such double barrel (side by sides) were of utility grade and in many different versions. Most were of the two trigger design and those with only a single trigger bring a premium as do ejectors.

Under the "Springfield"  brand only the model 215 had external hammers and if yours has same, we identified your model. Springfield produced another ten models with two triggers and hammerless. I could list all the models but without a number it would do us little good.

There were also three models made with single triggers, hammerless and double barrel SxS's.

Some additional information that MAY help you is that between 1949 and  1970 Stevens stamped a date code on every double barrel shotgun. Usually it is behind the hinge pin or ahead of the trigger guard on the bottom of the frame. It will appears as a small circle with a letter and number inside of same.

Take another look and double check the areas described for this stamping. If you locate one, I can provide you with the year of manufacture. If not...... yours may be one manufactured outside of the years listed.

I can also tell you that the average value of the models that it may be assuming "good" condition is between $350 and $450.

If you find any additional info on the gun...... let me know and we'll go from there.

I hope this information helps you and thank you for the question Eric.
