Question
I have a pre64 Model 70 Winchester 300 H&H with a serial #0f 59XXX. How can I tell if it is a Super Grade Model?
It has the black band on the front of the stock,a raised cheek piece and a jeweled bolt.
Answer
Gary,
Actually Gary you can use the process of elimination as to features and caliber.
The model 70 "Standard Grade" (which we'll use for our starting point) has a 24" round barrel except for the .220 Swift and the .300 H&H Magnum which have a 26" barrel. The Standard also was produced in the .375 H&H mag. with a 25" barrel. These rifles were produced with a plain walnut checkered forend and pistol stock. They were manufactured between 1936 and 1963.
Serial numbers 58382 to 75674 were made in 1946. (your rifle)
The Super Grade had the same barrel and calibers as the Standard Grade however.......... came with select walnut checkered and capped pistol grip stock with a cheekpiece and checkered forend with a plastic tip. The Super Grade was produced from 1936 to 1960, which still includes your rifles serial number.
There were about 9 other versions made of the M-70 however only one other was made in the .300 H&H which is the "Bull Gun, which has a 28" round barrel and had a target type stock.
Based on your description and my above contributions/covers, I'd say its safe to believe that yours is indeed a "Super Grade", barring any other conflicting information that I am not aware of.
I hope this covers it for you and thanks for the question Gary.
