Question
Sir, I have a Astra Cub that shoots perfectly. I want know if it can be carried with a round in the chamber safely. It has both a thumb and grip safety. Thank you for your time.
Answer
John,
It is absolutely safe to carry with a round in the chamber assuming that the thumb safety is engaged and the gun is carried in a holster that covers the trigger. In fact, in my opinion, carry a gun with the chamber empty is not a good thing. If you were to need your firearm for self defense, you are going to need it 'right now'. They extra time you add to the draw because you have to rack the slide and chamber a round could mean the difference between you getting the first shot off and prevailing in the confrontation or the other guy winning because he got the first shot off at you.
I know you are probably thinking that the Astra is designed as a 'pocket gun' and how am I going to get a holster. Check out the DeSantis Nemesis holster. It is around $15 and is made of neoprene. It slips into your pocket with the gun inside. Should you need to draw your pistol, you reach in the pocket, grab the grip and pull. The neoprene sticks to the inside of your pants pocket and the gun come out cleanly...check it out at http://www.desantisholster.com/n38.html
They don't make one specifically for the Astra, but check with them. I think that a holster for either the Beretta Tomcat or Keltec P-32 would probably work.
Just make sure that the thumb safety is engaged when you reholster and that the trigger is covered and you shouldn't have a problem at all.
Best regards,
Doug
