QuestionQUESTION: I would like to known what model side by side I have. All I can find on the gun is, J Steven Arms & tool co., Chicopee falls Mass., USA , Pat-D Mar. 19, 1909. I also found the ser,# 43291. I tried to look it up in Gun Parts, but could not find aanything that looked like it. Can you help with the ID so I can locate som Parts. Thank you. Charles J Noggle
ANSWER: Charles,
We have a bit of a mystery here. Can you give me some idea of the age of the gun? If it is fairly recent, it should have a model number of some sort on it. Also, if you could tell me whether it has double triggers, hammerless or with hammers. Sometimes the model identification is on the top lever. Maybe you could check there.
Some of the more recent side by sides (1960s to 1989) would be the Model 311 or 315. If it is older, there could be other models numbers.
The serial number doesn't tell me anything unfortunately...the date is just the patent date that they put on all the guns.
Sorry I can't be of more help...there are just too many unknown variables to be more precise.
Regards,
Doug

QUESTION: Hi Doug, The shotgun has a 30" barrel, one is mod. the other is full choke, and double trigger. It is hammerless, with the safety on top. the forearm is more narrow the the 311 model. When you brake it open, it has a difference cocking system then the 311. If you can give me an e-mail address, I can send some pictures. Charles
ANSWER: Charles,
I wish I could be of more help, but I'm not sure that even with photos I could figure out what you've got. There are several different variations on the Model 311 (letter codes from A to H) and then there is the 315, 515, and 5100. All look pretty similar and have similar actions. One thing you might check is the tang (where the receiver and stock come together). In the 315 the tang is 2 5/8 inches. On the 515 the tang is 3 1/8 inches.
I wish I could help you out, but there are just too many variations. I'd keep looking for the model number. On some of the older pieces it is there around the trigger area or on the barrel, but can be very faint due to age and wear.
Sorry I can't help you more....

Doug
