Question
Ok my brother has a Springfield XD .40 and I find that a blast to shoot. I have never shot a pistol before that shot so smoothly and accurate, but I plan on buying a pistol soon and I dont want to get the same one he has unless there is nothing out there that I like better. I was planning on looking at the SIG .40, Do you know what gun would be the better buy? I have never shot the SIG before, but plan on doing so soon. I just want to know which pistol is better. Thank you.

Answer
Lance,
Both of the guns your are looking at are exceptional combat pistols. The primary difference between the two is the XD is a polymer framed gun and has a grip safety in addition to the trigger safety. The performance characteristics are excellent and accessories are easy to find.
Regarding the SIG, they also have a polymer framed version, but most SIGs are of all steel construction. They come in double action only (DAO) versions or double action/single action versions (DA/SA). They are also exceptional guns (used by Navy Seals) and again, accessories are easy to find.
My suggestion is that you look at the different SIG models and see if you like one vs. the other. In .40 S&W you can get a variety of SIG models, the 226, 229 and 239.
Evaluate which you might like best by thinking about the following:
Size - both in terms of how it fits your hand and how easy it might be to conceal based on whether or not you intend to do concealed carry.
Features - do you want to have the grip safety or not.
Weight - if you intend to carry, lighter weight is easier to manage. Heavier guns have less felt recoil and are easier to shoot more accurately.
Cost - I don't know what your budget is, but SIGs are generally a little more expensive than the Springfield XD. (Definitely shop around for price...)
Overall, it comes down to the factors above and then which one you like. You couldn't go wrong with either one...
Best regards,
Doug
