Question
QUESTION: HI i live in New Jersey i like to know with out the Letter Of Need is there any other way i can get my carry permit i ask because all the security companies in this area do not issue that letter they expect you to have it and companies that do issue the letter want you to work for them from 6 months to a year before the give the letter i try armed truck but do to young age not thinking my credit is not so good so that out the door do you have any advice Thanks

ANSWER: Ismael,

Unfortunately, New Jersey is a "may issue" state with respect to their concealed weapons permit.  That means the issuing authority in New Jersey can make a unilateral decision as to whether they will issue the permit or not.  Usually the applicant must demonstrate a 'compelling need' for a firearm for self defense.

Honestly, if you are not a retired law enforcement officer, armored car driver or are employed by private security company, your chances of getting a carry permit in New Jersey are pretty much non-existent.  You can try applying to you local chief of police, but I doubt you will be successful unless you can prove need.

I also realize that it seems unfair that the security companies won't provide the letter for 6 months to a year, but if you think about it, it makes sense.  If they didn't do that, what would stop people from working there for a month to get their permit and then quitting.  They want to make sure you are going to be around for a while before they sponsor your permit.

Sorry I don't have better news for you...

Regards,

Doug

QUESTION: I have one more question what is a Florida non-residents carry permits and how dose it work i read

Answer
Ismael,

You can apply by mail for a Florida 'non-resident' CCW permit.

The Florida CCW application process is pretty straightforward. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services handle the application and processing of Florida Concealed Weapon Permits. With Florida you either qualify in an exempt category [Prior Law Enforcement Training, Military Training, Prior Firearms Experience, etc.] or you can attend any National Rifle Association or State Certified Firearms Course that includes weapon manipulation and live-fire range exercises.

With Florida's application you must also submit fingerprints which must be taken by a Law Enforcement Agency.  The cost of the permit is $117.00 for five years. Florida renewals are $107.00 every five-years.  Florida CCW Permits are also public record.

To apply for a Florida Non-Resident Concealed Weapon Permit, complete Florida's one-page application, send in one color photograph, one Florida fingerprint card [Completed by a Law Enforcement Agency], and have the application notarized. The processing time is  60 to 90 days and that is the standard turn-around time for Florida CCW Permits.

A Florida CCW Permit will allow you to carry a concealed weapon in the 28 states that recognize the Florida permit.  It is important to understand that neither New Jersey nor New York recognize a Florida permit.  None of the states in New England recognize the Florida permit either.  Only Pennsylvania, Delaware and Virginia do in the Northeast.

Hope this helps you out...
