Question
I am trying to get information on this rifle. So far it appears to be a Safari with a Mauser action. The serial number is L 24xx. It has a 2.5-8 power Bausch and Lomb scope with Bausch and Lomb scope mounts and rings. I would like to find out how old this rifle is and an approximate value. I am trying to decide if I want to sell it or make it my Big Game rifle. The scope seems broke, it only adjusts from 5 to 8 power and I don't know if I can get scope mounts for a new scope for this rifle or if the mounts/rings will fit a new scope. I would prefer to keep the rifle if I can get it scoped correctly. Any information is appreciated. Thanks.
Answer
Mike,
If the serial number is L followed by 4 numbers, your rifle was made between 1959 and 1960. If it has more numbers then that will change the date of mfg. As far as value, it all depends on condition, originality and if it has an aftermarket pad. Value ranges from $400-$1300, again depending on the condition. If it has several marks, blue ware, and a pad. I would set it up as a hunting rifle. If it is in prestine, mint condition and no pad. I would consider letting a collector have it and purchase a newer model and shoot that rifle.
Hope this helps.
Jim
