Question
How much is a Winchester 308 cal, lever action, model 88 in excellent condition worth. Serial # H258136
Answer
Carl,
I am generally not answering questions on firearms value as it is not an area that I do a lot of work in. However, since this is a pretty easy one, I thought I'd go ahead and tell you what I know.
There were three versions of the model 88. You'll have to figure out which one you have from the info below:
A. Model 88 (1955-1963) - Diamond cut checkering, no barrel band, 22" barrel
B. Model 88 (1964-1973) - Basket weave checkering, no barrel band, 22" barrel
C. Model 88 Carbine (1968-1973) - No checkering, one piece stock, barrel band, 19" barrel
In .308 Winchester, the values are as follows:
A. 98% condition=$925; 95% condition=$675; 90% condition=$550; 80% condition=$450
B. 98% condition=$600; 95% condition=$450; 90% condition=$400; 80% condition=$350
C 98% condition=$1,000; 95% condition=$775; 90% condition=$650; 80% condition=$475
Since I can actually take a look at the gun, I cannot verify that the gun is in any particular condition so I gave you the range. Please bear in mind that the condition is based on an expert's assessment, not just 'general appearance'. To be in 98% condition, it would need to be in nearly new condition. Most well taken care of firearms that were frequently used are rarely in better than 90% condition. I'm certainly not saying that your firearm is not in excellent condition, but rather just trying to realistically set your expectation on the values.
Hope this helps you out...
Doug
