using slugs in my 870 express

Question
I got an 870 express 12 gauge as a gift and was wanting to know if I can shoot slugs for deer in it without harming the barrel? It is a standard 870 and I have used it for dove hunting but never deer. I have seen slug guns advertised and understand there is a difference in the barrels, but I was hoping not to have to purchase a second gun. Thank you
Answer
Bryan,
The Remington 870 Express comes standard with a modified choke. You will not have any trouble shooting slugs. It will not harm the barrel. IF you want to be especially safe, the choke on the Remington is removable. Using a choke tool, you can simply take it out. Then there is no chance of damaging the choke at all.
Slugs are actually designed to be shot through a smooth barrel. This is why the slugs are rifled, not the barrel. The reality is that the rifling on the slugs does very little to cause 'spin' of the slug and improve accuracy.
Understand that your accuracy is going to be pretty limited shooting slugs. You can probably think in terms of shooting 3 inch groups at 50 yards, so you aren't going to be doing any 'long range sniping'. It gives the deer a fighting chance...(smile)
Looks like you are good to go with your one shotgun. No need to purchase another gun (unless you want to - smiling again)
Best regards,
Doug
