Question
QUESTION: Can you help me with the year my Colt .38 Special was made.
The left side of the barrel reads: OFFICIAL POLICE .38 SPECIAL CTG. The right side reads: COLT'S PT.F.A.MFG.CO. HARTFORD CONN.USA. Serial# 860124. It has a four (4) inch barrel and the blue is better then 98%. Grips are a very sturdy Stag and they are in fantastic shape. Sights are fixed with the sight channel serrated. The revolver is in excellent condition everywhere. Any and all help would be great. Thanks for your time.--Mike Tate
ANSWER: Mike,
Based on the serial number, your Colt revolver was manufactured in late 1957. The series started in 1947 and was discontinued in 1969. 98% condition value is $600. At 95% it drops to $375.
Hope this helps you out.

QUESTION: Thank you so much for your answer, you have been very helpful. Can you tell me how I can look up serial numbers for myself. Is there a formula or reading material I can purchase. Again thank you for your time.--Mike Tate
Answer
Mike,
There is no 'single source' for serial number info. Just lots of different places to know about. One of them is a website call 'Proof House'
http://proofhouse.com
They have information on some serial numbers, proof marks and other related info. You are welcome to check it out.
Cheers,
Doug
