Savage model 10fp stock

Question
I have a m10fp 308win brand new, with badger ordinance rings and bases and a 10x42 swfa super sniper scope. The factory stock that savage puts out seems to be weak from the receiver all the way to the forend. My question is how much could this cheap stock be affecting my accuracy and my rifles ability to hold zero?
Answer
Scott,
Your Savage 10FP is a great gun for the money. It is capable of sub MOA accuracy out of the box and has been chosen by a lot of Law Enforcement organizations as their 'sniper rifle' of choice for tactical teams.
The standard stock on the Savage 10FP has dual pillar bedding, with steel pillars. Also, since the barrel is 'free floated', you'll find that it doesn't actually make contact with the fore end for a significant portion of the barrel length. You can see this by sliding a piece of paper between the barrel and the stock.
The standard stock should have more than enough strength to maintain a zero and should be extremely accurate at normal ranges (300-500 yards).
If you start having 'accuracy' issues, there are a lot of things that are more likely than the stock to be at fault. Sight ring alignment, trigger adjustment, and the load that you are shooting all would be more likely to affect accuracy than the stock. In my case, I have also found that occasionally the shooter (me) is not able to shoot to the level of the gun, depending on how I am operating that day...
If you still want to make a change, there are lots of options for the Savage 10FP. You can get Choate style adjustable stocks, McMillan fiberglass versions, HS Precision and more. You can probably spend as much on the stock as you did for the rifle...(well, maybe that is stretching things a bit...)
I think you probably have a good platform to work with unless you are going for extreme long ranges....
Hope this helps...
