Question
Hi Bob,
I have a Stevens/Sprnfeild Side by Side Shotgun.
It has the number 5000 stamped on the right side of the receiver. Under the Fore Stock there is the number 16003.
Can you give me any information about this shotgun?
I.E. When was it made, Was it before Savage took them over, what is it worth...Etsetera...... I appreciate any advice or history on this.
Thanks
Joe

Answer
Hi Joe.

The numbers which you provided do not sound like valid Stevens shotgun model numbers. They could be serial numbers, proof marks, or other references. You might be able to find more markings if you disassemble and clean the gun, and inspect it closely with a bright light and magnifying glass since some of the old markings could be covered over, filled in, or worn down.

There was a side-by-side Stevens shotgun that was also marketed under the Springfield name: it was the Stevens Model 315 SxS. You can see the various models and configurations via the following link:

https://store.bluebookinc.com/InstantAccess/Model.aspx?product=5&id=1638

That site will also allow you to purchase the blue book data to determine the value. Most Stevens guns have very little value other than as practical shooters, assuming of course that they are still safe and in good condition. If in doubt then have it checked out by a gunsmith to be sure.

As far as the age, it will depend on the exact model of your gun and the full serial number. Once you have confirmed the model number and you are sure that you have the full serial number then you can look it up here:

https://store.bluebookinc.com/Info/PDF/Firearm/Serialize.pdf

If your gun is the Model 315 then it was made between 1914-1936 and was one of 192,000 guns made during that range. If 16003 is your serial number then it would have been at the early portion of the range, probably around 1916-1917.

Here are some search links which might help:

Good luck with your reasearch. Hope this helps!
